Kode DNA Apel Ditemukan
Satu tim yang terdiri dari 86 ilmuwan dari seluruh dunia untuk pertama kali berhasil menyusun kode genetika buah apel jenis Golden Delicious.
Terobosan DNA ini bisa membuka jalan bagi produksi jenis apel baru yang lebih bermutu dan lebih tahan hama penyakit.
Para ilmuwan dari 20 organisasi ini membutuhkan waktu dua tahun untuk mengungkap kode buah apel -yang merupakan genome tanaman terbesar yang pernah diungkap kode DNA nya saat ini.
Penemuan ini dipublikasikan dalam jurnal terkenal Nature Genetics.
Keuntungan kompetititf
Profesor Riccardo Velasco dari yayasan Edmund Mach di Italia, yang memimpin tim peneliti tersebut, mengatakan penyusunan genome itu “bisa berdampak besar pada aplikasi penanamannya”.
“Terobosan ini bisa membantu kita mengembangkan jenis apel berkualitas tinggi dan menciptakan jenis baru di pasar apel,” ujarnya kepada BBC.
Kate Evans dari Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan Buah Universitas Washington State mengatakan penemuan itu akan membantu “produksi apel yang berkesinambungan dalam jangka panjang”.
Para ilmuwan berharap peningkatan mutu apel jenis Golden Delicious yang populer -yang ditemukan di negara bagian Virginia Barat Amerika Serikat lebih dari satu abad lalu- ini bisa memperbaiki rasa, tamilan dan kerenyahan buah itu.
Para peneliti ini juga berhasil menemukan nenek moyang buah apel, dan menemukan bahwa nenek moyang liar buah ini, Malus sieversii, aslinya tumbuh di pegununan Kazakhstan selatan.
Sekarang terdapat lebih dari 7.500 jenis apel di seluruh dunia.
Para ilmuwan juga menemukan bahwa ukuran besar genone apel tercipta ketika secara tidak sengaja digandakan di awal sejarah evolusinya.
